The Poetry of Masonry
This year’s masonry design competition challenges students to develop an innovative conceptual masonry design which highlights the poetic nature of masonry wall systems. Successful applicants will present visualizations of masonry systems and their architectural potential.
Eligibility
*This competition is open to any student(s) currently enrolled in their undergraduate B.A.S. or graduate M.Arch at the School of Architecture, University of Waterloo.
Award Criteria
- Masonry is a critical component of the Architectural design intent. Masonry is a key feature of the building or a specific space withing the project
- Innovative use of masonry;
- Creative use of masonry techniques, patterns and technologies
- Creative masonry applications
- Innovative masonry products or hybrid strategies (e.g. 3DP masonry units)
- Technical proficiency;
- Display an understanding of masonry and its integration in structural or facade systems
- Appropriate architectural detailing
- Craftsmanship;
- The type of masonry and the type of pattern use shows consideration for the architectural intent
- Detail design of the masonry application supports or enhances the features of the space or building
- Sustainability
- The use of masonry plays a key role in the overall sustainability strategy for the project
- Poetry
- Artistry
- Does the material use contribute to the concept of the project?
- Cultural or historical qualities that the project connects to?

- PDF format – 2 panels 18″x24″ landscape or portrait
The Judging panel will consider the following criteria:
- Innovative use of masonry
- Technical proficiency
- Craftsmanship
- Overall presentation
- Consideration of sustainability
- The poetic nature of the design

TERM
Information on how to enter and prizes form part of these official rules (“Official Rules”). By submitting an entry, each entrant agrees to the Official Rules and warrants that his or her entry complies with all requirements set out in the Official Rules. This is a skill-based contest based on both innovation of design and implementation of all requested materials (brick, block and stone).
WHO MAY ENTER
Contest is open to any student of the University of Waterloo’s Architectural Program. Student must be majoring in architecture. Up to three students may work as a team to contribute an entry, but please note that any prize acquired will be divided evenly among team members.
HOW TO ENTER
Entries should be submitted electronically via the Masonry Design Contest webpage (“Contest Page”).
Images must not have been published previously in other media.
The design, in its entirety, must be a single work of original material created by the Contest entrant(s). By entering the Contest, entrant(s) represents, acknowledges, and warrants that the submitted designs are an original work created solely by the entrant(s), that the image does not infringe on the copyrights, trademarks, moral rights, rights of privacy/publicity or intellectual property rights of any person or entity, and that no other party has any right, title, claim, or interest in the image.
CONTEST PRIZES
Potential winners shall be required to sign and return within thirty (30) days following an attempted notification, an Affidavit, Declaration or Certificate of Eligibility, Liability Release, and where legally permissible, a Publicity Release and Warranty of Ownership and License in which the entrant warrants that he/she is the owner of the design and grants to Sponsor and its licensees the irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide non-exclusive license to reproduce, distribute, display, and create derivative works of the entry (along with a name credit) in connection with the Contest and promotion of the Contest without additional compensation. Failure to execute and deliver any required documents to Sponsor by the specified deadline may result in disqualification from the Contest, and selection of an alternate potential winner.
JUDGING
The contest will be judged by a panel of brick, block and stone experts representing the masonry industry in Ontario. The contest will consist of two (2) rounds of judging. The first round will select the top five (5) entries, which will be based on innovation and aesthetic appeal of design. The second round will select the final winners, who will be determined based on their ability to creatively integrate all three materials (brick, block and stone) in the design. Contestants will be notified by email of next steps. Decisions of the judges are final and binding.
LICENSE
By entering the Contest, all entrants grant an irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide non-exclusive license to Authorized Parties, to reproduce, distribute, display and create derivative works of the entries (along with a name credit) in connection with the Contest and promotion of the Contest, in any media now or hereafter known, including, but not limited to: Display at a potential exhibition of winners; publications featuring select entries in the Contest; advertising which promotes masonry design.
CONDITIONS
THIS CONTEST IS VOID WHERE PROHIBITED. Entrants agree that this Contest shall be subject to and governed by the laws of Ontario and the forum for any dispute shall be in the Province of Ontario, Canada. To the extent permitted by law, the right to litigate, to seek injunctive relief or to make any other recourse to judicial or any other procedure in case of disputes or claims resulting from or on connection with this Contest are hereby excluded and any entrant expressly waives any and all such rights. Certain restrictions may apply. Entries void if the Sponsor determines the design to not be an original or to be structurally impossible.
By entering, entrants also agree (a) to be bound by these Official Rules; (b) that the decisions of the Judges are final and binding with respect to all matters relating to the Contest; and (c) if the entrant wins that Sponsor may use the winning photographs and each winner’s name in any advertising relating to the Contest or future promotions without compensation or approval (except where prohibited by law). In the event that the selected winner(s) of any prize is/are ineligible, cannot be traced or does/do not respond within thirty (30) days to a winner notification as required by the “Contest Prizes” Rules above, or refuses the prize, the prize will be forfeited and Sponsor, in its sole discretion, may choose whether to award the prize to another entrant.
The Sponsor reserves the right to verify the validity and originality of any entry and/or entrant (including an entrant’s identity and address) and to disqualify any entrant who submits an entry that is not in accordance with these Official Rules or who tampers with the entry process. Failure by the Sponsor to enforce any of its rights at any stage does not constitute a waiver of those rights.
RIGHT TO CANCEL OR SUSPEND CONTEST
If for any reason the Contest is not capable of running as planned from causes beyond the control of Sponsor, Sponsor will not retain any rights in the submitted images.
